STEM Outreach

New York City Math Tutoring Program

The Stevens chapters of Alpha Phi Omega and Tau Beta Pi currently host weekly accelerated lectures for middle school students in predominantly lower income areas who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We are currently working with The Dock Street School and Forte Preparatory Academy. In addition, we are preparing the students for the 2022 national MATHCOUNTS competition. If you are interested in seeing this program at your school, please email us at tbp@stevens.edu.

Hoboken Youth Outreach

The Hoboken Youth STEM Outreach is a program, which is run every semester, where Tau Beta Pi members and candidates can volunteer to demonstrate fun and interactive experiments to young students and their families. In 2019, Tau Beta Pi chose to host a Spaghetti Tower competition after teaching the students the fundamentals of Civil Engineering and structural design!

Tau Beta Pi has hosted a semesterly teaching program for 6th-8th graders at Hoboken Catholic Academy (HCA) every semester for the past several years. The program consists of a one hour after-school program lesson on any STEM topic each week for five weeks. Volunteers from Tau Beta Pi go to HCA and teach a high-level lesson on varying STEM related subjects, followed by facilitating a related interactive exercise. In 2020, we held a series of virtual activities teaching kids the fundamentals of engineering with simple office supplies that can be found around the home. One activity related sport activities with classical mechanics. Tau Beta Pi will be participating in this initiative again in Fall 2021 and are working diligently to come up with a new innovative ideas that touches upon engineering fundamentals. Throughout the years, we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the principal and students of HCA!

The Hoboken Youth STEM Fair is an event, which was run every spring prior to the pandemic. Organizations throughout Stevens can volunteer to demonstrate fun and interactive experiments to young students and their families. In 2019, Tau Beta Pi chose to host a Spaghetti Tower competition after teaching the students the fundamentals of Civil Engineering and structural design! Around 300 students from schools all throughout Hoboken attended and participated in our activity. Tau Beta Pi hopes to safely bring back this initiative in the spring of 2022.
